The (Fe+Ni)/Ni ratio as a second parameter for Type Ia supernova properties
نویسندگان
چکیده
A variation of the relative content of (Fe+Ni) versus Ni may be responsible for the observed scatter of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) about a mean relation between their intrinsic brightness and the shape of their light curve. Synthetic light curves are computed of parametrised Chandrasekhar-mass explosion models of constant kinetic energy, where the ejecta are divided into an inner NSE zone, composed of (Fe+Ni) inside and Ni outside, an outer zone with Intermediate Mass Elements and a CO zone. Both the size of the NSE zone and the fraction of (Fe+Ni) v. Ni are varied systematically. Models with the same original NSE content but different (Fe+Ni)/Ni ratios reach different peak brightness but have similar light curve shapes. Synthetic spectra indicate that the V -band decline rate is not affected by the (Fe+Ni)/Ni ratio. While the Ni mass and the total NSE mass are the dominant parameters determining the peak luminosity and the shape of the light curve, respectively, a variation in the (Fe+Ni)/Ni ratio, which may depend on the metallicity of the progenitor (Timmes, Brown & Truran 2003) is likely to account for a significant part of the observed scatter of local SNe Ia about the mean brightness–decline rate relation.

Distribution of Ni Yields of Type Ia Supernovae and Implications for Progenitors
The amount of Ni produced in type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosion is probably the most important physical parameter underlying the observed correlation of SN Ia luminosities with their light curves. Based on an empirical relation between the Ni mass and the light curve parameter △m15, we obtained rough estimates of the Ni mass for a large sample of nearby SNe Ia with the aim of exploring the div...
متن کاملNebular spectra and abundance tomography of the type Ia supernova SN 2011fe: a normal SN Ia with a stable Fe core
A series of optical and one near-infrared nebular spectra covering the first year of the Type Ia supernova SN 2011fe are presented and modelled. The density profile that proved best for the early optical/ultraviolet spectra, “ρ-11fe”, was extended to lower velocities to include the regions that emit at nebular epochs. Model ρ-11fe is intermediate between the fast deflagration model W7 and a low...

متن کاملA Test for the Nature of the Type Ia Supernova Explosion Mechanism
Currently popular models for Type Ia supernovæ (SNe Ia) fall into two general classes. The first comprises explosions of nearly pure carbon/oxygen (C/O) white dwarfs at the Chandrasekhar limit which ignite near their centers. The second consists of lowermass C/O cores which are ignited by the detonation of an accreted surface helium layer. Explosions of the latter type produce copious Fe, Co an...
متن کامل0 Central Elemental Abundance Ratios in the Perseus Cluster : Resonant Scattering or SN Ia Enrichment ?
We have determined elemental abundance ratios in the core of the Perseus cluster for several elements. These ratios indicate a central dominance of SN Ia ejecta similar to that found for A496, A2199 and A3571 (Dupke & White 2000a). Simultaneous analysis of ASCA spectra from SIS1, GIS 2&3 shows that the ratio of Ni to Fe abundances is ∼ 3.4 ± 1.1 times Solar within the central 4. This ratio is c...
